How to read it

Breadth asks how many stocks are taking part in a move. An index can rise on the strength of a few large companies while most stocks fall; breadth shows that.

Advances and declines count every stock that rose or fell today. The share of stocks above their 50-day average is a slower gauge: it says how many are in an uptrend over the past ten weeks. The 200-day version does the same for the past year.

Very low readings mark washed-out markets and very high ones broad rallies, but neither is a timing signal by itself: what they have led to is a question for the record.

The moving-average figures use today's Nifty 500 members throughout, so companies that have left the index are missing from the earlier history.

Questions people ask

What is market breadth?

A measure of how many stocks are rising against how many are falling, or how many are in an uptrend. It shows whether a market move is broad or carried by a few names.

What is the advance-decline ratio today?

On 9 October 2026, 1,758 NSE stocks advanced and 1,111 declined, a ratio of 1.58 to 1.

How many Nifty 500 stocks are above their 200 DMA?

39.5% at the close on 9 October 2026, and 18.4% above their 50-day average.

Is low breadth a buy signal?

A very low reading shows a market that has been sold broadly. Whether that has marked good entry points is something only the historical record can answer, and it has not always.
