What India VIX tells you

India VIX is a single number for how much movement traders expect in Nifty 50 over the next month. It is read as a fear gauge. It is better read as a price.

What it measures

India VIX is NSE's volatility index. It shows the yearly rate of movement in Nifty 50 that option prices imply for the next thirty days.

It comes from prices, not opinion. When traders are willing to pay more for Nifty options (which pay off when the market moves a lot), VIX rises. When options are cheap, it falls.

It says nothing about direction. A VIX of 20 means larger moves are being priced in than at 12; it does not say whether they will be up or down.

Turning VIX into points

VIX is quoted as an annual percentage. To get the move expected over a shorter time, multiply by the square root of the fraction of a year.

For one trading day, divide by about 15.9 (the square root of 252). A VIX of 16 implies a daily move of about 1%. For a month of 21 trading days, multiply the daily figure by about 4.6.

That move is one standard deviation: the band the market is expected to stay inside about two times in three. It is not a limit.

India VIX today shows the current level and the moves it implies for Nifty in points.

How NSE works it out

NSE takes the best bid and ask prices of out-of-the-money Nifty options in the near and next month, weights them by strike, and blends the two months into a constant thirty-day measure. The method follows the Cboe's VIX, adapted to the Nifty order book.

Because it uses a wide strip of strikes, it reflects the price of protection against big moves, not only options near the current level.

Implied against actual

The most useful comparison is between VIX (what is expected) and how much Nifty has actually been moving (realised volatility).

Option sellers are paid for taking risk, so implied volatility usually sits somewhat above realised. When the gap is unusually wide, options are expensive against recent movement; when VIX falls below realised, they are cheap.

Schema measured how well VIX's ranges have held: how often the range VIX implies holds.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a low VIX as safety. Low readings mean calm is priced in, which is when a shock costs most.
  • Treating a high VIX as a sell signal. VIX peaks during falls, often near their end.
  • Comparing across years without care. The ordinary level of VIX shifts over time; compare with the past year as well as with all history.

Questions people ask

What does India VIX stand for?

VIX stands for volatility index. India VIX is NSE's index of the volatility that Nifty option prices imply for the next thirty days.

What is a good India VIX level?

There is no good or bad level. Low readings mean small moves are expected and options are cheap; high readings mean large moves are expected and options are expensive.

Can I trade India VIX?

India VIX itself cannot be bought. NSE has offered futures on it at times, with little trading. Most traders use it as an input for pricing and sizing Nifty options.

Why does India VIX rise when the market falls?

Falls tend to be faster than rises, and investors rush to buy puts for protection. Both push option prices, and so VIX, up.
