How to read it
India VIX is NSE's measure of how much movement traders expect in Nifty 50 over the next thirty days. It is worked out from the prices of Nifty options: when traders pay up for options, VIX rises.
It measures the expected size of moves, not their direction. It tends to jump when the market falls quickly, which is why it is called a fear gauge, but a high VIX can sit beside a rising market, and a low VIX is not a promise of calm.
The useful comparison is with how much Nifty has actually been moving. When VIX is well above that, options are expensive relative to recent movement; when it is below, they are cheap.
Questions people ask
What is India VIX?
India VIX is a volatility index published by NSE. It shows the annualised movement in Nifty 50 that option prices imply for the next thirty days.
What is a normal level of India VIX?
Over the past year its middle reading has been 12.66. Readings in the low teens have been ordinary in recent years; readings above 20 have come with stress.
How do I turn India VIX into an expected move?
Divide by the square root of 252 for one day. A VIX of 14.38 implies a one-day move of about ±0.91%, and about ±4.15% over a month.
Does a high India VIX mean the market will fall?
No. VIX measures the size of expected moves, not their direction. It usually rises when the market falls sharply, but it can also rise ahead of a known event while prices hold.
How is India VIX calculated?
NSE computes it from the best bid and ask prices of near-month and next-month Nifty option contracts, using the method of the Cboe's VIX adapted to the Nifty order book.
